What to Expect From Your First Allied Health Home Visit
If you or your loved one is about to start home-based allied health therapy, it’s normal to have questions. At EnableU, we want you to feel prepared, comfortable, and confident about what comes next. Here’s a complete guide to your first in-home therapy session.
Step 1: Introduction and Consent
Your therapist will begin by introducing themselves and explaining their role (OT, physio, etc.). They'll confirm your consent to proceed with the session, and answer any initial questions. If English isn’t your preferred language, we can arrange a multilingual therapist or interpreter as needed.
Step 2: Understanding Your Needs and Goals
The therapist will ask questions about your daily life, current challenges, and goals. These might include:
- What tasks are difficult right now (e.g. dressing, walking, stairs)?
- Do you use any equipment or mobility aids?
- What activities or roles are important to you?
- Have you received therapy in the past?
Our approach is person-first—we listen carefully, involve family where appropriate, and tailor therapy to what matters to you.
Step 3: Functional Assessment
Depending on your needs, the therapist may perform a functional assessment. This helps us understand how you move, think, or manage tasks around the home. Examples include:
- Walking and transfers (e.g. bed to chair)
- Stairs, shower access, or kitchen setup
- Range of motion, balance, or grip strength
- Problem-solving or memory (if relevant)
For children, the assessment may involve play-based activities or observation of routines like feeding or communication.
Step 4: Home Environment Review
We’ll also review your physical environment to ensure it’s safe and supportive. This may involve:
- Checking for trip hazards, layout concerns, or unsafe furniture
- Recommending equipment or modifications (e.g. rails, shower chairs)
- Discussing how to make spaces more functional
Step 5: Discussing Next Steps
At the end of your first visit, we’ll talk through what happens next:
- Therapy plan and session frequency
- Reports needed for NDIS or aged care reviews
- Referrals to other team members (e.g. speech therapist, OT)
We’ll ensure you understand the plan and feel involved in all decisions about your care.
How to Prepare for Your First Visit
- Have any relevant documents ready (NDIS plan, medical reports)
- Wear comfortable clothing and allow at least 60–90 minutes
- Let us know if you need an interpreter or cultural considerations
- Think about your goals—what do you want to be able to do?
